Articles about fibromyalgia

Many people suffer from this disease. At the Estepona Hyperbaric Centre we have a team that specialises in the treatment of fibromyalgia.

Fibromyalgia is a chronic disease that usually affects women and causes pain throughout the body, chronic fatigue and other symptoms such as insomnia, depression or irritable bowel syndrome, among others.

In this collection of articles we will bring you information about this disease. To do this we will talk about topics as interesting and necessary as the definition of fibromyalgia, symptoms, types of fibromyalgia, symptoms, the origin and causes, treatment with oxygen therapy … and much more information that we will create to nourish this section of our blog.

In addition, we will talk about cases of women who have passed through our center and have received oxygen therapy treatment. We will see how hyperbaric medicine has helped them and what changes they and their family have noticed.

Advice and care for Fibromyalgia patients

Fibromyalgia is a disease that affects many patients and causes them chronic pain, fatigue, stress, tiredness…and many other symptoms that they must deal with on a daily basis. Hyperbaric medicine helps these patients feel better and lessens those symptoms.

In addition to the treatments in hyperbaric chamber, today we are going to give you a series of advice and care that patients with fibromyalgia can follow to make their day-to-day life more bearable.

Advice and care for Fibromyalgia patients

We are aware that fibromyalgia brings with it a chronic pain that in many occasions prevents people who suffer it from making any kind of effort. Even so, trying to do physical activity has many benefits since it strengthens the muscles and the cardiovascular system, helps you fall asleep, decreases the feeling of fatigue, anxiety and stress.

It is advisable to do an aerobic exercise, that is, those activities of lower intensity, at least 3 times a week, with a duration between 40 and 60 minutes a day.

Relaxing baths

If you have the opportunity and have a bathtub, taking a relaxing bath is a very good option for coping with the symptoms of fibromyalgia. The benefits of this activity are based on the effects of warm water on the body as it helps reduce muscle tension, promotes relaxation and decreases pain.

Learning to stop and rest

Just as we recommended exercise at the beginning of this article, we now advise you to avoid the fatigue caused by over-activity. In other words, you must learn to recognize when your body is tired and then stop and not overexert yourself.

Getting rest will make the body more relaxed, so that fatigue, tension and pain are reduced.

Controlling emotions

The symptoms of fibromyalgia are very connected to emotions. So much so that many patients have character changes due to having this disease. They become more irascible, negative, and are filled with a constant feeling of frustration.

Knowing how to identify these feelings and knowing how to control them promotes a good mood.

How Hyperbaric Medicine Helps Fibromyalgia Patients

In the Hyperbaric Centre of Estepona we are pioneers in the treatment of Fibromyalgia with oxygen therapy, carrying out avant-garde protocols that show a very important reduction of the symptoms, reaching in most cases the total elimination of the pain, not requiring later treatments with analgesic medication.

What are trigger points in fibromyalgia?

One of the terms often used when talking about fibromyalgia is trigger points. But what are these points? In the article we bring you today we are going to explain and deepen more about this term.

Trigger Points in Fibromyalgia

Trigger points in fibromyalgia refer to pain points, since although people with fibromyalgia suffer from chronic generalized pain, the reality is that this pain is usually concentrated in a number of specific areas of the body, called trigger points.

These are those areas of the body that are most sensitive to touch, since with slight pressure they can cause acute pain.

How to recognize trigger points

In order to recognize these points, it is necessary to put pressure on them. The result will be that the patient suffers unbearable pain produced by this pressure, which can be mild.

The 18 trigger points

From 11 to 18 points of pain may present a patient suffering from fibromyalgia. They are usually located near the joints, near the neck, hip, back, knees, buttocks or elbows.

The list of trigger point locations in fibromyalgia patients is as follows:

  • Occiput: suboccipital muscle insertions.
  • Lower cervical: anterior face of the C5-C7 intertransverse spaces.
  • Trapezium: midpoint of the upper margin.
  • Supraspinous: in the origins, above the scapula.
  • Second rib: second costochondral union.
  • Lateral epicondyle: 2 cm distally to the lateral epicondyle.
  • Gluteus: upper external quadrant of the buttock.
  • Greater trochanter: posterior to the prominence of the trochanter.
  • Knee: adipose cushion on the inside of the knee, close to the joint.

Relief of pain points

One of the fundamental indications of hyperbaric oxygen is chronic pain and Fibromyalgia, fundamentally Fibromyalgia. It is a prevalent pathology in women of very disabling adult age and we achieve through hyperbaric oxygen some very specific protocols, very determined to ensure that these people end up asymptomatic and do not have to take more medication in the future.

The main symptoms of fibromyalgia

Fribromyalgia as a disease presents a wide variety of symptoms, which can sometimes be confused with other diseases and not know how to identify that it is Fibromyalgia. Today we tell you how to identify the symptoms of fibromyalgia.

Symptoms of fibromyalgia

It was in 1992 when it was considered a disease by the World Health Organization. Although it is surprising how little it has been recognized as a disease, it is understood when knowing that it is a very difficult disease to diagnose.

At present, 2.4% of the Spanish population, or more than one million people, suffer from fibromyalgia, of which almost 85% are women. The age range of these women suffering from this disease is usually between 20 and 50 years of age.

Early symptoms of fibromyalgia

According to the Spanish Association of Rheumatology 90% of patients have fatigue, 70-80% sleep disorders and up to 25% anxiety or depression.

Pain all over the body

What many sick people agree on is that “everything hurts”. This is due to myofascial pain, which causes points in the body that should not hurt to become extremely painful points. It often happens that the pain varies in relation to the time of day, activity level, climate changes, lack of sleep or stress.

Digestive disorders

Many of the people who suffer from this disease also have to live with problems such as diarrhea and constipation, slow digestions, syndromes such as irritable bowel syndrome … etc.

It is very frequent in these patients to feel a generalized rigidity, especially when waking up in the mornings. They also tend to feel swelling in the extremities, both in the hands and feet.

Sleeping badly

Sleep disturbances are common in fibromyalgia patients, resulting in people always feeling tired because they can’t get a good night’s rest.

Anxiety and depression are two symptoms of fibromyalgia that, unfortunately, occur very often in people suffering from this disease. It seems that the state of anxiety and depression can be a consequence of pain interferences.

Treatment of Fibromyalgia

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy reduces the symptoms and pain caused by fibromyalgia. The first consultation is free of charge with our doctor, who will evaluate your case and recommend the best treatment for each patient.

Fibromyalgia patients treated with oxygen therapy: Carmen Escaño and Lina Molina

We begin this new section where we are going to tell you about the evolution of patients who come to the Estepona Hyperbaric Center and try oxygen therapy to palliate and treat, along with their treatments, the diseases they suffer.

We are also going to focus on those people who come to our centre in order to improve their sporting performance, feel full of energy, relieve stress…in short, improve their quality of life.

Fibromyalgia Patients: Carmen Escaño and Lina Molina

We are going to begin this section by relating the experience of two of our patients, Carmen Escaño and Lina Molina. Both suffer from fibromyalgia.

Today we are talking about the so-called silent disease, which incapacitates a high percentage of women, known as Fibromyalgia.

These patients have an evolution superior to 25 years, that generated a very deficient quality of life.

The day-to-day life of a patient with fibromyalgia

Several patients have passed through our centre who refer this ailment and which prevents them from leading a normal life. For them the simple fact of getting out of bed is already very hard. They can go to bed the night before without pain and the next day can not get up from the pain they suffer.

María José Campanario and the hyperbaric chamber against fibromyalgia

María José Campanario alleviates the terrible pains caused by the fibromyalgia she suffers thanks to a hyperbaric chamber.

The wife of the famous right-handed, Jesulín de Ubrique, has long suffered the painful effects of fibromyalgia, which have even led to hospital admission on two occasions last Christmas. Fortunately, it seems that María José Campanario has found in the hyperbaric chamber an ally that helps her, along with her basic treatment, to manage this disease much better.

What is Fibromyalgia?

As many may not know what this disease is, let’s take this opportunity to briefly explain what it is and its symptoms.

Fibromyalgia is a disorder that affects the skeletal muscle in a generalized way, framed within rheumatic diseases, and which, in addition, is accompanied by problems such as:

Imbalances in the state of mind, being able to provoke anxiety or even depression.
Loss of memory.
Sleep problems
Irritable bowel syndrome

Many of these problems are in turn symptoms of this disease, along with others such as there are specific points on the body that touch feels a sharp pain or fatigue that is overwhelming to wake up.

As María José Campanario herself explained in an interview, fibromyalgia is a very hard disease:

“I hit rock bottom. The medication no longer had any effect on me and I couldn’t sleep, and without sleep you lose the joy, you lose the strength, you lose the desire to eat… you lose everything”.

The hyperbaric chamber of María José Campanario

The hyperbaric chamber used by María José Campanario to palliate the effects of the fibromyalgia that she suffers, what she mainly does is to carry out a treatment called hyperbaric oxygenation.

This treatment consists of the following:

Hyperbaric oxygenation is a medical specialty that consists of introducing the patient into a hyperbaric chamber under a higher pressure than atmospheric pressure to breathe 100% pure oxygen. Under these conditions, the oxygen becomes medicine, initiating a therapeutic activity in the organism.

In short, what is being achieved is to increase the amount of oxygen in the blood.

Benefits of hyperbaric oxygenation.

And why is this treatment so good and is it helping María José Campanario so much?

In the words of a doctor who is an expert in hyperbaric medicine, hyperbaric oxygen therapy works on three levels:The first of them is the sympathicolytic effect that acts on the painful impulses.
that the C-fibers transmit.
The second is the generation of endogenous opioids via nitric oxide.
And the third is that it also acts by blocking the sodium and calcium channels.

Treatments in hyperbaric oxygenation are becoming more and more widespread, as Doctor Viqueira, an expert with more than 38 years of experience in this field, tells us:

Rheumatologists are increasingly referring more public health patients with fibromyalgia to these treatments.

All this leads to the following beneficial effects of this therapy:

Anti-inflammatory effects from vasoconstriction.
It stimulates the cells that produce collagen.
Activates the immune response
Accelerates rehabilitation processes in ligament, bone, joint or muscle injuries.
Decreases symptoms related to depression, anger, sadness, or fatigue
Intervenes in the regulation of oxidative stress
Reduces muscle fatigue
Increases energy at the cellular level

As can be seen, it reduces many of the symptoms suffered by fibromyalgia patients, as is the case of María José campanario.

Treatments in hyperbaric chamber

It is true that in the case of Jesulín de Ubrique’s wife, they have their own hyperbaric chamber at home. This is not necessary since at the Estepona Hyperbaric Center we offer you these treatments, advised by the best professionals in this field. We advise you and study your case so that you can treat your ailments.
