How Oxygen Therapy Helps Treat Diabetic Foot

Diabetes is a disease that has increased dramatically in recent decades, constituting one of the world’s greatest health problems. According to the World Health Organization, around 420 million people worldwide have diabetes. In Spain, about 1,000 people are diagnosed every day, which means about 400,000 a year, according to data provided by the scientific director of the Center for Biomedical Research Network of Diabetes and Associated Metabolic Diseases (Ciberdem), Eduard Montanya.

One of the main consequences that we find with this disease is the so-called Diabetic Foot.

Diabetic foot is defined as any infection, ulcer or destruction of the tissues of the foot associated with diabetes.

Treat Diabetic Foot with Hyperbaric Chamber

Oxygen therapy is one of the most effective non-invasive methods for treating diabetic foot because it accelerates wound healing after debridement, as well as reducing the likelihood of greater amputation of extremities in patients with infected diabetic foot by performing this therapy in conjunction with the conventional treatment indicated by your physician.

Thanks to a study, “Use of Hyperbaric Oxygen to Treat Diabetic Foot Ulcers” from 2002, it was shown that the average recovery rate of diabetic foot ulcers treated in the hyperbaric chamber is 89 percent, compared to 61 percent when only conventional treatments are used.

Effects of oxygen therapy to treat Diabetic Foot

The effects that hyperbaric medicine has in the treatment of diabetic foot are:

  • It favors the synthesis of collagen to generate new tissue in the wound.
  • It improves blood sugar levels by stimulating pancreas function and decreasing insulin resistance.
  • Reduces edema by increasing blood flow to the affected site.
  • Accelerates recovery processes by increasing the amount of dissolved oxygen in tissues.

When a patient is admitted with a diabetic foot picture and treatment with hyperbaric oxygenation is indicated in a short term presents improvements in the response to infections, the coloration of the foot changes, daily and sports activities that were suspended are resumed and faster healing of wounds is achieved. Some patients even begin to experience pain in the toes, a sensation they had lost since experiencing the injury.

Treatment for Alzheimer’s with hyperbaric chamber

Although today, unfortunately, Alzheimer’s is a disease that has no cure. Even so, in recent years there have been studies that shed a little light and hope. Today we are going to talk about the studies that have been carried out using the hyperbaric chamber as a treatment for Alzheimer’s disease.

Treatment for Alzheimer’s with hyperbaric chamber

The Alzheimer’s Association, a voluntary health organization that is a leader in Alzheimer’s care, support, and research, defines Alzheimer’s as a type of dementia that causes problems with memory, thinking, and behavior. Symptoms usually develop slowly and get worse over time, until they are so severe that they interfere with daily tasks.

People over the age of 65 are the most affected by this disease, although there are cases of younger people suffering from Alzheimer’s, also known as early-onset Alzheimer’s disease.

Because of this, in these early cases, what Alzheimer’s treatments are currently looking for, in addition to a cure, is to succeed in slowing or slowing down degenerative progress. And this is where hyperbaric medicine comes in.

Scientific study of a diagnosed Alzheimer’s patient treated with Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy.

One of the latest scientific studies conducted to treat this disease with hyperbaric medicine has been conducted by researchers Paul Harch of Louisiana State University School of Medicine and Edward Fogarty, a radiologist at the University of North Dakota School of Medicine.

For this trial they had the collaboration of a 58-year-old woman diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s, who underwent hyperbaric chamber sessions.

Results of the study

After 40 treatment sessions in hyperbaric chamber, it was demonstrated with image tests, specifically PET: Tomography by Positron Emission, as Hyperbaric Medicine had slowed down the progress of the deterioration caused by the disease in this woman, even temporarily reversing it.

Others that the patient felt better were how her mood improved and her ability to perform activities of daily living. In addition, she showed an increase in energy and activity. He was able to recover his quality of life.

Interview with Inés Verdugo, about Chronic Pain

Today we want to share with all of you the case of Inés, a 73-year-old patient who came to the Estepona Hyperbaric Centre, and tells us how she knew us and how she feels after having tried hyperbaric medicine to treat the chronic pain she has been suffering for years.

Interview with Inés Verdugo, about Chronic Pain

How did you hear about the Estepona Hyperbaric Center?

Look I was in the doctor’s office, there was a boy and I began to tell him about the discomfort I felt, and tells me the boy does not know a center on the promenade? He told me a name and I came. I arrived and Jesus attended me, an excellent person and he gave me an appointment for the next day so that the doctor could see me. And here I am wonderfully.

What changes have you felt since you tried hyperbaric medicine?

I feel a lot better because I used to drown, I used to get a craving and a drowning, and now I don’t. In addition to the pain in my leg, I felt very tired, in a very bad mood. I didn’t like anything. I don’t want to start dancing, I just want to be able to “run my house”.

What was your day-to-day like before the treatment?

I went to bed at nine. Nervous I lost at 10 o’clock at night I got up and I warmed up a glass of milk, I drank it, I went to bed and after half an hour I wanted to pee. In the end I would get up at midnight when I would look at my watch and think “I couldn’t get to sleep”.

And not now. I eat dinner, go to bed and even in the morning.

Do you recommend coming to the Hyperbaric Center?

I’d recommend it to everyone who has anxiety, depression… to come here.Let them see that a new life is breathed here. I feel quite better. I would recommend it to everyone, that what is important is wellbeing and health.

How Oxygen Therapy Helps Treat Stress

Many of the patients who visit our Center do so due to the great burden they carry caused by stress. One of the indications for hyperbaric chamber treatments is stress relief. Today we tell you how oxygen therapy helps to treat stress.

Stress and health

Stress can be understood as an overload for the individual. This overload depends both on the demands of the situation and the resources available to the individual to deal with the situation. The greater the demands of the situation and the lesser the resources of the individual, the greater the overload.

Spanish Society for the Study of Anxiety and Stress

People who suffer from stress, and are not able to handle the situations that cause that stress over a prolonged period of time, can have their health affected. Some of the symptoms that stress can cause are suffering from high blood pressure, skin problems, depression and anxiety, and even, in the most acute cases, affects the day to day with memory problems, poor memory, tiredness, diarrhea or constipation, problems falling asleep … among other symptoms.

How Oxygen Therapy Helps Treat Stress

The answer is very simple. When the patient enters the hyperbaric chamber what he experiences is an increase of pure oxygen in his bloodstream, which produces an immediate effect of relaxation and rest in the body.

  • Reduces insomnia and helps to fall asleep
  • Combats chronic fatigue syndrome
  • Reduces hypertension
  • Revitalizes sexual appetite
  • It sharpens the concentration and helps in the processes that stimulate the memory in the brain.

Stop dreaming about sleeping and wake up every day full of energy.

Today we bring you the case of one of our patients, Leyre, who suffers from chronic pain and has told us that it has meant for her treatment with oxygen therapy.
¡Thank you very much Leyre for your collaboration!

Before we start we would like to talk a little about Leyre.

Leyre is a 45 year old woman, she may sound familiar to many of you since she is a TV presenter in programmes such as “Hoy comemos en…” or “Made in Marbella”. Focusing on her medical case, Leyre suffers from terrible pains for a herniated disc in the L5/S3, in which she has protrusions in the 1, 2, 3 and 4. The range was such that it even affects her legs, not even feel the toes.

Due to these pains, she decided to look for some treatment that will help her to overcome them, and thanks to a friend she found our center, and, therefore, the oxygen therapy.

After trying our Leyre tells us that she is much more relaxed and that now she is able to sleep all night without the pain waking her up.

It was wonderful, because it was from not being able to sleep, from getting into bed and the pain being unbearable, to, suddenly, getting into this magnificent chamber, and, after a few sessions, getting rid of the pain.

Leyre González, patient of Hiperbaric Center of Estepona

One of the advantages of oxygen therapy is that when you enter the chamber, the benefits for the body are multiple. In Leyre’s case, in addition to relieving her chronic pain, she has seen her skin look smoother.

Have you noticed any other effect in the oxygen therapy sessions?
Yes, the skin is impressive as I change, with much more collagen.

Finally, we asked Leyre if he recommended both the treatments with oxygen therapy and our Center in Estepona, and these were his words.

Of course I would recommend it.

We invite you to try our treatments with hyperbaric medicine as Leyre. We remind you that the first appointment is free, where our specialist doctor will evaluate your case.

5th Anniversary of the Estepona Hyperbaric Center

Effects of Hyperbaric Medicine, real or placebos?

Even today, despite numerous medical documents confirming the efficiency of hyperbaric chamber oxygen therapy, there are doubts about its effectiveness.

Effects of Hyperbaric Medicine, real or placebos?

We recognize that we understand these reluctances produced by the proliferation of hyperbaric chambers, even in hospitals, which can put at risk the lives of patients since not all of them have all the minimum requirements to impart these therapies correctly.

This reality, which we must face as professionals, was presented at the II Congress of Hyperbaric Medicine organized by the Spanish Association of Hyperbaric and Subaquatic Medicine (ASEMHS), which brought together more than 200 specialists and was held last February 22nd and 23rd, where the medical team of the Estepona Hyperbaric Centre was present for another year.

Dr. Emilio Salas, specialist in Hyperbaric Medicine (HBO) in San Fernando (Cadiz), explained that :

Those doctors who are thinking of working with this medical specialty demand that the chambers reach pressures between 2 and 3 absolute atmospheres and in which oxygen is breathed at 100% concentration to achieve therapeutic levels as occurs in the classic indications of this therapy such as inhalation of carbon monoxide (CO), treatment of radio-induced injuries, decompression diving accidents, inhalation of other toxic gases, gangrene treatment, treatment of wounds of torpid evolution and osteomelitis among other indications.

All members of the Board of Directors of the Spanish Association of Hyperbaric and Underwater Medicine

“According to the scientific literature, therapeutic results are between 2 and 3 absolute atmospheres and it is important to transmit this knowledge to the medical community and administrations”.

We can then affirm what, the effects of hyperbaric medicine are real as long as they are applied correctly and in the proper facilities for it.

Lyme and Hyperbaric Medicine: The Case of Debbie Curras

Today we come to talk about one of our patients and how hyperbaric medicine has helped her cope with her disease, Lyme.
Lyme and Hyperbaric Medicine: The Case of Debbie Curras

Debbie Curras is a 46-year-old woman who suffers from Lyme. She visited us at the Hyperbaric Center in Estepona since Germany had recommended this treatment as a complement to treat her ailment and help her improve in the day to day.

“I knew hyperbaric medicine when I went to Germany to be treated for my ailment. There the German doctors recommended hyperbaric oxygen as part of the treatment of my illness” Debbie Curras, patient of the Hyperbaric Center of Estepona.

Lyme and Hyperbaric Medicine 04
What is Lyme disease?

Lyme is a bacterial infection acquired by the bite of an infected tick. This disease is caused by 4 species of bacteria:

Borrelia burgdorferi
Borrelia mayonii
Borrelia afzelii
Borrelia garinii

Some of the effects of Lyme are arterial and muscular pain, although it affects more parts of the body as it is a multi-systemic disease. Other systems that may be affected are. Gastrointestinal, Pulmonary, Musculoskeletal or even can affect the reproductive system.
How Hyperbaric Medicine Helps Improve Lyme Symptoms

Thanks to Debbie Curras’ testimony, we can see first-hand the beneficial effects of oxygen therapy in treating Lyme disease.

“I have had Lyme disease for six and a half years. And this is one of the treatments that is helping me the most.

And he keeps telling us how he’s helping him with one of Lyme’s outbreaks:

“When I come here for hyperbaric medicine treatments it’s because either I have a known outbreak of the disease, which is the outbreak that produces the toxin from the bacteria. The treatment helps me a lot to overcome those symptoms that are usually mental fatigue, tiredness and joint pain.

Lyme and Hyperbaric Medicine 03

It ends with a phrase that clears all doubts about Lyme and Hyperbaric Medicine:

“When I leave the sessions, and at the end of the days, the improvement is clear”.

We also recommend the Marbella Lyme Clinic, which is located in Estepona, to guide you in this disease, as it is the first clinic dedicated to Lyme in Spain. If you have any questions about Lyme and Hyperbaric Medicine, do not hesitate to make an appointment with our Doctor. Remember, the first consultation is free.
